Develop and practice skills for looking at art and interpreting meaning and ideas. In this NGV educator-led session, students will analyse and compare works of art from different places and times to discuss how art elements (such as colour, line and shape), principles (such as contrast, repetition and movement) and use of materials can communicate ideas and create aesthetic qualities. Students will also consider how the contemporary, historical and cultural contexts in which works of art are made and viewed can inform meanings, ideas and aesthetic qualities in works of art, and how we interpret them.

Students will:

  • Identify and describe art elements and principles and materials in works of art.
  • Discuss how art elements and principles and materials can be used to communicate meanings and ideas in works of art.
  • Consider how contemporary, historical and cultural contexts influences meanings and ideas in works of art.
