The Art of Portraiture

Mon–Fri, 10 am, 11:30 am, 1 pm, 2:30 pm
Levels 3–12
NGV International & The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia

What is a portrait? What can a portrait tell us about a person, time or place? Join an NGV educator to explore these questions and more as students view and respond to portraits from different time periods and cultural contexts. Students will consider how portraits capture feelings, emotions and ideas, and why so many artists are inspired to make portraits.

Students will:

  • Identify and explain why artists produce portraits.
  • Examine the role of the subject and the artist in portraiture.
  • Analyse and interpret different portraits in the NGV Collection drawing on observations, ideas and imagination.

Duration: 1 hour
Cost: $10.50 per student
