Explore cultural icons, community and life on Country. With an NGV educator in the Gallery, students explore works in the First Nations and Australian art Collection, with a focus on the work of Kaylene Whiskey. Then in the studio, inspired by Whiskey’s vibrant and distinctive art practice, students will create a collage celebrating their heroes and important objects and symbols in their lives. This program offers a unique opportunity for personal expression, fostering a connection between the students’ own experiences and the rich artistic world of Kaylene Whiskey.

About the Artist
Kaylene Whiskey is an award-winning Yankunytjatjara artist from Indulkana, a remote Indigenous community in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, South Australia. Whiskey’s works are irreverent and witty, layered with commentary around Indigenous life and its ever evolving and complicated relationship with tradition and contemporary popular influences. Her lifelong dream is for Dolly Parton to visit her on Country. Whiskey was the feature artist for the 2023 MECCA Holiday Collaboration. Her work is held in the permanent collections nationally and internationally, including the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; North Dakota Museum of Art, North Dakota; Saint Louis Art Museum, Missouri.
