Yee I-Lan was born in Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia, and her imaginative photographs often refer to the people and landscape of that region. In her Kinabalu series, the artist explores a story of displacement common to many indigenous Malaysians. The images in the series depict the Kadazandusun people, Sabah’s largest ethnic group, whose lands have been overtaken by urbanisation and palm oil plantations.
