About this work

The earliest kiln-fired, glazed Vietnamese ceramics were produced in northern Vietnam around the first century BCE. Vietnam was subject to Chinese rule in the north until 938 CE, and the ceramic traditions of China have greatly influenced Vietnamese ceramics, particularly in the production of cobalt blue underglaze stonewares, as seen in this example. This type of ware, decorated with locally mined cobalt, was traded throughout South-East Asia in large numbers.
