During the sixteenth century, the celebrated tea master Sen no Rikyū personally crafted or commissioned from artisans tea utensils for tea ceremonies. Since that time, tea masters and their disciples have continued the practice of making elegant and simple bamboo whisks, tea scoops and water ladles, as well as painting, calligraphy and other accoutrements for personal use in the tea ceremony.
