Alessandro Gandini made six chiaroscuro woodcuts, now excessively rare. This woodcut depicts an episode from the Gospel of Luke in which a penitent woman, often associated with Mary Magdalene, washes Christ’s feet with her tears and long hair. It is based on a design by Raphael for a fresco in the Santissima Trinità dei Monti in Rome that was executed by his studio assistants. Gandini relied upon a drawing by Parmigianino after one of the Raphael workshop’s preparatory drawings. Gandini’s woodblock was acquired by the Bolognese printer and publisher Andrea Andreani, who added his address and issued impressions in 1609.
