About this work

Napier Waller was one of the first Australian artists to make and exhibit linocuts. He learned the technique in England while convalescing after the amputation of his right arm. In this poignant self-portrait print, Waller depicts himself with two arms, posing with a cigarette in elegant evening attire. He is standing in front of his mural War in the Melbourne Public Library (now the State Library of Victoria), which he completed in 1928. The mural was recently restored and can be seen above the library’s marble staircase.
