Arne Jacobsen designed the Swan chair as part of the furnishings for his SAS (Scandinavian Airline Systems) Royal Hotel, located about the air terminal in Copenhagen that he also designed. Like Aarnio, Saarinen and the Eameses, Jacobsen was experimenting with modern furniture design during the 1950s that engaged with new materials and technologies and was keen to design seating that embraced the sitter in more rounded, sculptural forms. The elegant, upholstered Swan chair introduced a warm yet modern sensibility and was placed throughout the hotel; it remains in production today.
