The decoration on this Venetian porcelain plate derives from Chinese blue-and-white Kraak wares produced for export to Europe as well as Indian painted cotton textiles, or chintzes that were imported in large quantities into England and Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The colour palette of underglaze blue tones, iron red and touches of gold reflects that of imported Indian chintzes but may also reflect the influence of Japanese Kakiemon and imari porcelains, imari decoration characterised by a more lavish use of gold.
