During his fifty-year career Mike Parr has produced series of works and performances that explore the limits of language and the body. In the early 1980s he began his long-running Self Portrait Project, which took on a new dimension towards the end of the decade when he started making etched self-portraits. The versatility of printmaking, and the possibility of reworking plates, enabled Parr to pursue endless variations of his image. This characteristic perfectly suited his exploration of the inherent instability and relative nature of the ‘self’. Femalias is one of the major works from the artist’s Self Portrait Project.
