Daniel Crooks is known for digital videos and photographs that capture and alter time and motion. His videos often show everyday scenes of traffic, trains, crowds and individuals passing through urban environments, which the artist manipulates using a range of techniques, including stop-motion animation, time-lapse and precision camera motion control. Crooks developed his signature ‘time-slice’ technique, featured here, more than two decades ago. He uses multiple cameras and a method of meticulously cutting, warping and recombining thin slices of a moving image to create these complex shifts in perspective and temporality.
