Louis Majorelle is most well known for his sophisticated furniture designs in the Art Nouveau style. However, around 1900 he produced a small number of ceramic vases for the Lunéville earthenware manufactory, where Ernest Bussière also worked. The two knew each other well, Bussière having worked for Majorelle in his Parisian furniture workshop while studying. There is an aesthetic symbiosis between their ceramic vessels that speaks of a shared fascination for the natural world and a respect for the humble earthenware medium, which Japanese craftsmen also esteemed.
