Grant Nimmo’s forest landscapes have a storybook-like quality, portraying the beauty of nature while suggesting darker forces. The pack of strange dogs depicts a pine forest scene, framed by a dark painted border that recalls the Romantic painting tradition of the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Nimmo produced this work after a visit to the Scottish Highlands; the painting is a response to the atmosphere he experienced there. The title references a line from a Scottish folk song that describes, from a hare’s point of view, the thrill of being chased through the landscape by hunting dogs.
