In 1953 Yvonne Audette travelled to New York, where she became involved in the Abstract Expressionism movement, meeting artists and writers such as Willem de Kooning and Clement Greenberg. Unlike the spontaneous marks of many of her contemporaries, Audette advanced a more nuanced approach to abstraction, allowing compositions to develop intuitively over months, or even years, as she added, subtracted and combined forms. Journey into light was originally conceived as two separate paintings; however, Audette paired them as a diptych after their compositions evolved and their aesthetic synergy became apparent.
