Nan Goldin began to photograph her close friends in the New York transgender community in 1972. This work belongs to a suite of pictures made at the 1991 gay pride parade. Earlier images show this close-knit circle of friends getting dressed and made-up before the event, while others show the disheveled aftermath of the day. In this work, Misty looks directly into the camera with an expression that is at once challenging and inviting. It is a powerful expression of sexuality and identity.
